A model to study colonic fermentation

Don’t imagine that medical research is a glamorous profession. Dr Christine Edwards spent three years in our department devising a continuous anaerobic culture of human faeces, by which she could study the fermentation of carbohydrate. Her determination earned her a PhD and ultimately a Professorship. Where there’s muck, there’s… a very dedicated scientist!
