Special skills:
I have joint qualification as a consultant physician (gastroenterologist) and psychoanalytically trained psychotherapist. My practice tends to focus on functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Dyspepsia, Anorectal Disorders, and Eating Disorders; all illnesses that lie at the interface between mind and body (psychophysiological and psychosomatic disorders) and represent a bodily reaction to life events and situations. This perspective also gives me an insight into holistic and complementary therapies.
I was both a Professor of Gastrointestinal Physiology and Human Nutrition and have been consulted regarding dietary treatments, pharmaceutical claims and gut physiology.

Over 500 original publications on gut physiology, eating behaviour, irritable bowel syndrome, bowel disorders. 11 books including Sick and Tired; Healing the Illnesses Doctors Cannot Cure, 2005. Weidenfeld and Nicholson and The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Self Management Programme.
